The short answer
- Tell it who you are, what you want and why. That's the whole formula.
- Be specific about length, tone and who the answer is for.
- If the answer misses, just say what to change. You don't have to start over.
- Paste in the actual text or describe the real situation for the best help.

Talk to it like a helpful neighbor
Watch a vague request turn into a clear one using three simple parts: who you are, what you want and the goal.
Read this lesson as text
- Before: "insurance letter." That's too vague, so the AI has to guess.
- After: "I'm 72 and my roof was damaged in a storm. Please write a short, polite letter to my insurance company asking them to send an inspector this week."
- The formula: who you are, what you want and the goal. Review the answer and ask a follow-up when needed.
Tip 1: Use the who, what and goal formula
The most common beginner mistake is typing two or three words, like "insurance letter." The AI has to guess everything else. Instead, give it three things:
Before: "insurance letter"
After: "I'm 72 and my roof was damaged in last week's storm. Please write a short, polite letter to my insurance company asking them to send an inspector this week."
Same request, completely different result.
Try it: build a better request
Tap the three parts to add them to your request, and watch the AI's answer improve.
Your request
Dear Claims Department, my roof was damaged in last week's storm, and water is now leaking into my home. Please send an inspector this week so repairs can begin. Thank you for your quick help.
Tip 2: Say how long and what tone
Add a few words about the shape you want: "in three sentences," "warm and friendly," "firm but polite," or "in a bulleted list I can print."
Tip 3: Say who it's for
"Explain it like you're talking to a smart friend who isn't a doctor" or "Write it so my 8-year-old grandson can understand." This one sentence changes the whole answer.
Tip 4: Keep the conversation going
AI remembers what you said earlier in the same chat. If the first answer isn't right, don't start over. Just say "shorter," "less formal," "add a line about the date," or "I didn't understand the second part."
Tip 5: Give it the real thing
If you want help with a letter you received, a recipe or instructions, copy and paste the text in, or take a photo if your app supports it. Real details get real help. (Remove account numbers and personal ID numbers first.)
Tip 6: Ask it to ask you questions
Not sure what details it needs? Say: "Before you answer, ask me any questions you need." It will interview you, which is a wonderfully easy way to get a great result.
Tip 7: Talk instead of type
ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Muse all offer ways to speak your request. Talking is natural, so you'll automatically include more detail than you would by typing on a small keyboard.
Try these today
- "I'm hosting 6 people for dinner Saturday and one is vegetarian. Suggest a simple menu I can mostly make ahead."
- "Here's a letter from my HOA [paste]. Explain what they're asking me to do, in plain English."
- "I'm 68 and want to start walking for exercise. Give me a gentle 4-week plan and remind me to check with my doctor first."

Quick questions
Do I need special words to talk to AI?
No. Write or speak the way you'd explain something to a helpful neighbor. More detail gives better answers.
What if the AI's answer is wrong?
Tell it what's wrong and ask again. For important facts, like health, legal or money matters, double-check with a professional.
Does this work on ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Muse?
Yes. These tips work the same way on all four.
