  • You can type to it or simply talk out loud, like a phone call.
  • It's great for letters, explanations, recipes and planning. Double-check facts that matter.

What ChatGPT is, in one sentence

ChatGPT is a computer program you can talk to in everyday language. You ask a question or describe what you need, and it writes back an answer, usually in a few seconds. It was made by a company called OpenAI and launched in late 2022. It can be a useful place to start exploring everyday AI tasks.

Think of it as a very well-read assistant who's available day and night, never gets impatient and is happy to explain something a second, third or tenth time.

What people over 50 actually use it for

  • Writing: thank-you notes, complaint letters, emails to the HOA and toasts for a granddaughter's wedding.
  • Explaining things: "What does this line on my bill mean?" or "Explain the difference between Medicare Part C and Part D."
  • Planning: trips, weekly meals, garden layouts and party menus.
  • Everyday questions: "Why is my basil wilting?" or "What's a good substitute for buttermilk?"
  • Keeping your mind sharp: trivia, learning a language and discussing a book you just read.

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes, you can use ChatGPT for free. OpenAI also sells paid plans that give you more use and extra features, but most people are happy on the free version for a long time. If a website or caller says you must pay to "unlock" ChatGPT, be suspicious. Only sign up through chatgpt.com or the official ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play.

How to ask your first question

  1. Go to chatgpt.com on your computer, or download the official ChatGPT app on your phone.
  2. Create an account with your email address, or sign in with Google or Apple if you already use them.
  3. Find the box that says something like "Ask anything."
  4. Type a question the way you'd say it to a friend, for example: "Help me write a short thank-you note to my neighbor Ruth for watering my plants."
  5. Tap the arrow button to send. Read the answer. If it's not quite right, just say so: "Make it warmer and shorter."

Tip: talk instead of type

Look for the microphone or voice button. You can have a spoken conversation with ChatGPT, which you may prefer to typing on a small screen.

What ChatGPT gets wrong

ChatGPT is impressive, but it isn't perfect. It can state something confidently that turns out to be wrong. The industry calls this a "hallucination." That's why we teach a simple rule: use AI for drafts and ideas, and double-check facts that matter, like medication, legal, money and health questions, with a real professional.

Staying safe

  • Never type passwords, PINs, Social Security or Medicare numbers, or full card numbers.
  • Download the app only from the official store. Look-alike apps exist.
  • Remember that scammers use AI too. Read our guide to AI voice cloning scams.

What about Claude, Grok and Muse?

ChatGPT isn't the only AI helper. Claude, Grok and Meta's Muse all work in a similar way, each with its own strengths. See our side-by-side comparison for seniors, or take the 60-second quiz.
